HISTORICAL
INFORMATION
ABOUT THIS PAGE:
The following links should help you
find information about the war on a variety of topics and from a
multitude of perspectives. Their descriptions are meant to help you
decide whether you want to investigate the subject further, and in
some cases I've tried to guide you to their most valuable sections.
As a result, some of the links will put you at the introduction of a
site generally related to the Vietnam War, while others will take you
straight to a narrowly focused area of interest. Either way, you may
want to bookmark this page so that you feel free to explore the
others without worrying about getting lost. Finally, make sure to
keep your mind open and your imagination flowing while you browse;
after all, you never know when next great curricular idea will be
born!

GENERAL
BACKGROUND:
- The
American Experience: Vietnam
Online: Based on the
PBS Series by the same title, this site is an excellent source for
information, especially in the"Introduction," "Who's Who," and
"Timeline" sections. I recommend starting your exploration
here.
- Chronology:
This site is part of the "Vietnam:Yesterday and Today" page
(referenced below -- truly an amazing resource). A comprehensive
timeline, it also provides links to other relevant sites.
- Important
Documents: Part of a
Vassar College website for a course on the Vietnam War, this page
provides additional links to major documents from the war
era.
EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES:
- Vietnam
War Internet Project:
This impressive site provides a comprehensive network
of collected sites related to the war. Run by Webmaster John
Tegtmeir, it is "an education organization dedicated to providing
information and documents about the various Indochina Wars and to
the collection and electronic publication on the web of oral
histories and memoirs of both those who served in and those who
opposed those conflicts." Categories include a recommended reading
list, a newsgroup, an image library, related documents, a military
unit homepage, and memoirs from the war. The heart of the site,
though, is its Resources Index page, where hundreds of links are
listed alphabetically by subject. If you have the time and energy,
this site could provide lesson plans for weeks.
- Vietnam:
A Teacher's Guide:
This essay is both a narrative of the war and
curricular ideas to go along with the text. Prepared by three
university professors and three secondary school teachers for the
Asia Society's "Focus on Asian Studies" journal back in 1983, it
is an excellent resource for facts and ideas.
- The
History Net: This
on-line magazine provides a full array of historical information,
from magazine articles to special reports and chat rooms. Check
out the Vietnam Magazine for directly related material, or search
around for other prossibilities.
- Sample
Syllabae: This page provides a collection of
college syllabae dealing with the 1960s in general and the Vietnam
War in particular. It is part of a larger on-line humanities
project based at the University of Virginia and entitled,
The Sixties
Project & Viet Nam Generation, Inc.,
which has potentially helpful leads, especially in the Vietnam
War, Inc. area. Overall, though I think the best value here is in
browsing other course outlines for literature suggestions and
lesson plans.
LEGACY OF THE
WAR:
- Vietnam:
Yesterday and Today:
This site could be the most frequently cross-linked page on the
internet -- and with good reason. Well maintained, well
constructed, and well researched, it is THE place to go for
curriculum ideas. Its emphasis on the past and present of the war,
as well as its frequent comparisons to other wars, makes for the
presentation of insightful material. Furthermore, it provides
links to countless other sites, including ones that deal with
movies, books, and music. By all means, spend some time here.
You'll be glad you did!
- Vietnam
Veterans' Memorial:
This is the officical website for the Vietnam Memorial,
better known as the Wall. It provides some interesting other
links, as well as discussions of the statues that were added to
the memorial. The most interesting use of this page, however,
could be as a comparison to some of the unofficial websites for
the Memorial, such as The
Vietnam Veterans Homepage and its "Remembrances" section.
THE VIETNAMESE
PERSPECTIVE:
- The
History of Vietnam:
This site provides a timeline of Vietnam's history,
dating back to prehistoric times. The most valuable information on
this page is the "Excerpt" section, where the author addresses
modern Vietnamese history. To research more about Vietnamese
culture, you might want to explore some of the other topics listed
at the top of page, such as music, literature, and architecture.
In addition, You may wish to visit the Home Page for this site,
VietGate, which provides
what it refers to as an "on-line Vietnamese Community."
- Vietnam
Today: This will link
you to Vietnam's first public site, which is published in Hanoi.
To really delve into it you'll have to register as a member,
though even without doing that you may find this interesting to
look into briefly. The Culture section, particularly the history,
museums, and monuments, are worthwhile (I especially recommend
looking at the Dien Bien Phu and Cu Chi Tunnel links in the
monument segment). This page is referenced as part of a larger
Vietnam based site, entitled The Vietnam
Picture Archive. You may find this helpful to browse for a
wide variety of issues related to contemporary Vietnam, from radio
broadcasts to travel diaries.
